How We Started Mowing Lawns in Ottawa, ON
Hi there!
Nathan Maki here, President of Maki’s Mowing and More Inc. Thanks for stopping by our site today.
When I was 15 my mom clipped an ad from the paper for me. Little did I know that slip of newsprint would change my life and that of my family. The Old Forge Community Resource Centre was looking for workers to help senior citizens in Ottawa maintain their properties and stay in their homes longer. The idea of helping people and working outside appealed to me, so I started riding around on my bike to mow lawns, weed gardens, and trim hedges for seniors. In 2004, at age 20, I decided to make an official lawn care business of it, just to make enough money to pay my way through university — or so I thought. I enlisted my brother Jonathon’s help and together we launched Maki’s Mowing and More. We were driving around Nepean in the family car pulling a trailer we rebuilt from the (very rusty) frame up, raking, aerating, and mowing lawns. Humble beginnings for what is now a thriving service business with six trucks on the road serving hundreds of clients in Ottawa, Nepean, Kanata, and Prescott!
As we grew, our clients would often ask us if we could do other services besides mowing. They were tired of tracking down one guy to clean their eavestroughs, another company to trim their hedges, a gardener to mind their gardens, a weed control company to spray for weeds or fertilize their lawn, a landscaper to do their hardscaping, and so on. So we evolved into a one-stop shop, bringing all these property maintenance and landscaping needs under one roof at Maki’s: a name our clients know they can trust and with one convenient seasonal contract.
We can give you the comfort, peace, and freedom to enjoy your property to the fullest.
What started as a small summer job to pay my tuition through Carleton University grew by 500% in the first year and continued to grow every year after that! By the time I finished university there were too many people relying on our services (and we were enjoying the work too much) to just shut it down. In 2006 I married my wife Rachel, who worked with me in the field until we had our son Xander, then she moved into managing our accounts receivables in the office. Over the last 20 years, we have continued to grow our family business into one of the largest and most professional lawn care and landscaping businesses in Ottawa, Nepean, Kanata, and Prescott based on our core values of Excellence, Efficiency, and Integrity. Our vision here at Maki’s Inc. is to give as many people as possible the comfort of a well-maintained home, the peace of knowing all their needs will be met by trustworthy people, and the free time to enjoy all the seasons of life.
When you’re done browsing here, I would be more than happy to speak with you personally about how we can help give you the comfort, peace, and freedom to enjoy your property to the fullest.
I look forward to meeting you!
Sincerely,
Nathan Maki
